about

Note:There is a story that the word 'punk' apparently derived from colonial India where white bosses would use boys to 'fan' them during the heat. These boys were called 'punkawallahs' – 'punka' means 'fan' in our part of the world. The punkawallahs were also sexually abused by these white slave drivers. The word then travelled West + used against young kids who were street prostitutes or living on the edge. It was then reclaimed years later by similar kids as an identity arising from the filth, saying a big fuck you to society + its horrible abusive system. Neo-colonialism continues to this day with people from the West trying to divide with intellect, money, small power, + privilege even in our small scenes.

lyrics

This is the history, the etymology of slavery and liberty!

Little boys with big big fans, Cooling off the sweat of the big, white man!

They eyed their bodies from their seats

Bored colonialists like dogs on heat

Saying “चुप लागेर तेरो पंखा हप्का! (chuppalagera punkha hapka); चुप लागेर तेरो चाक हल्ला! (chuppalagera tero chak halla!)”

[shut up + shake that fan; shut up + shake your ass]

Punk is the word they used to define

The delinquent youth who refused to stay in line

Fanning the flames of discontent

Punk spread across the continents

Sell your body! Sell your roots! The kids on the street! The destitutes!

Reclaim the word! Reclaim the truth! The punkawallah was a prostitute!

The liberated punkawallahs!
